Arbor Day
This committee coordinates with the City of York to have a number of native trees, donated by the club, planted at the annual April event that features an address by the Mayor and attracts local media. In recent years, the trees have been planted in Penn Park in downtown York, and the Mayor has read proclamations that York has been honored by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA.”
In the past, on day-of the planting there was usually a class or two of elementary school students participating. There were usually three stations: the County Forester, did a station on identifying the age of trees; someone did a nature hike; someone assisted the children in planting a tree. The Mayor came to receive the York as “Tree City” banner and deliver the proclamation for Arbor Day. Smokey Bear usually put in an appearance. This initiative was started by Anne Collier, a former President of the Garden Club of York.
